SuperAct Program

FACT: One gallon of gasoline pollutes 1,000,000 gallons of water.

In 1986, the Florida Legislature created the act in response to the contamination from leaking underground storage tanks. The Florida Department of Health was given the authority to provide field and laboratory services, toxicological risk assessment, and investigation of drinking water contamination complaints. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection registers, regulates and oversees petroleum facilities that have a leak that may be a threat to drinking water. Environmental Health monitors public and private wells in areas where there is known or expected petroleum contamination of the ground water. We do this by charting and sampling drinking water wells around contamination sites. In 2002, our program was one of only 4 counties since 1986 to achieve a perfect audit making us one of the best in Florida.
