Your Health Department
The Florida Legislature voted in 1996 to create the Florida Department of
Health, which began operation on January 1, 1997--108 years after the state created the
first State Board of Health in response to a yellow fever epidemic. The Department of
Health operates 67 county health departments, which provide services directly to our
communities, and the clinics that deliver health services to children with severe medical
problems. On July 1, 1997, the program that oversees the quality of patient care and
treatment statewide joins the department. |
